The Garden Builders designed and built this small contemporary garden to provide a space for entertainment both day and night. Previously the garden was dominated by overgrown trees and shrubs but was transformed by ensuring maximum potential of the entire area was used to create an enticing area to relax and socialise.

To unify the border of the garden the rear fence was replaced, and all boundary walls were unified in texture and material with a sealed cedar batten finish cladding.

Being a dog friendly home, the client wanted to ensure all planting was safe from digging loving dogs and surfaces would be easy to maintain and keep clean. This was firstly achieved by raising the planting beds to achieve a sense of security adding a solid structure that surrounded and fortified the garden. The sleeper finish was selected to provide texture and interest while providing durability and ease of cleaning. The choice of a dark grey finish creates a warm feel while accentuating the other colours in the garden.

Limiting the colour pallet allows other colours to stand out such as the sharp green from the Ferns. Through the varying use of timber throughout the garden there are a lot of staggered lines, using 600x600mm contemporary grid layout provides a welcoming contrast while creating a calm, stationary area. The dark smooth porcelain tiles not only provide a sleek, stylish flooring but are also easy to maintain. On ground level the dark grey theme was continued in the paving. To optimise the space the inclusion of a suspended bench provides a complimentary layer breaking up the intensity of the raised sleeper wall whilst adding another layer of silvering wood connecting the screen and the decking. By suspending the bench, a wider decking area is created due to the void left beneath giving the impression of a larger area while adding an elegant touch.

A stunning focal point of this secluded garden is a feature fire. Including a real fire within the design emphasises this seating area to be enjoyed socially in the evening. The block grey structure is an extension of the raised planting beds, breaking away from the boundary and into the garden. The Corten steel lid turns the unit into a multi-functional table, a calming space to enjoy a sunny morning coffee. The orange rust compliments the dark greys and the raw timber tones, creating a warm burst of colour that helps make the garden elements connect to create a feeling of calm in a contemporary style.

A key feature of this design was the lighting scheme which provides a welcoming ambience in the evening while also illuminating the space to become a feature to be viewed from inside the house. The cedar screen provides a backdrop to up light feature trees and architectural foliage bringing the garden to life through warm colours and interesting shades. Strip lighting was included on the underside of the bench to highlight the area and to entice you.

A large Corten feature planter acts as a focal point. It incorporates two important elements of the garden; plants and Corten and links it back to the view of the house to create a 360 design flow of the garden. Specimen trees were used to provide height and draw the eye while careful positioning of the trees provided privacy. To accommodate sunny and shady sides to the garden two different types of planting were considered. To the right, there was a focus of lush greens provided by the ferns while to the left a Mediterranean scheme was used. Colours were carefully selected to create year round interest, from the splashes of purple and silver from the Salvia’s and lavender to the tinges of brown and red in the Autumn provided by the various grasses. The floral colour pallet has been kept to a combination of mainly purples and lilacs as the base colours with splashes of white, yellow and orange to add a delicate layer of sharp colour to this plant filled garden.
