Shoreditch roof terrace design in London

We were engaged by our client to undertake the re-design, construction and planting of his L-shaped penthouse roof terrace. Our client requested a social space, one that could be enjoyed from inside and equally all year round from the outside. The space needed to be low maintenance and enticing.

We decided a robust and lightweight surface mix of Porcelain tiles and Cedar decking both laid onto an adjustable pedestal system fitted the brief. We then organised the fabrication of bright and mixed coloured steel planters, these were hand-made and designed to fit into the awkward shaped perimeter and corners. Sections of the planters had integrated Balau timber planks to provide additional seating. An LPG fire table was designed and commissioned, we arranged for an LPG engineer to undertake all aspects of the discreet fitting required to make this work.

The planting was a mix of screening and seasonal interest planting, but with planting to ideally suit a tough roof terrace design situation and was very low maintenance to reflect the client's busy professional life.

Lighting was a mix of spike lights to up-light the taller planting and LED strip lighting to specific planters with designed cut outs to allow the LED to sit snuggly within the void detail, directly underneath the LED, we dressed the base of the planters with polished white cobbles to reflect the LED and provide an interesting textural comparison with the smooth planters.

This terrace works equally well for both day and night, but it's really special when all the lighting is on and the gas fire is turned on full blast, who wouldn't be enticed to go out onto the terrace and enjoy.
