Award Winning Gardens

RHS Gold Medal 09

Designed by Kate Gould & constructed by The Garden Builders

Award Winning Garden

The Garden Builders was chosen by designer Kate Gould to construct this award-winning show garden, called 'Eco Chic', within the Urban Garden category at the 2009 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. With the theme of recycling and inner-city urban regeneration, Eco Chic was inspired by the possibilities of a 'shady, left-over space squashed between two high office buildings', and cleverly featured builders' materials normally left on a building site post-construction, such as scaffold poles and boards, sheet metal mesh and sections of stone. The garden received a gold medal and was named Best Urban Garden in Show.

The forbidding urban space was softened by a lush green wall and a sophisticated stone water feature, creating an area of tranquillity and relaxation. The striking entrance to the show garden was a stunning walkway pergola built from scaffold poles, and featuring a glass roof and glass walling, mesh walkway and crisp under-planting including shade-loving ferns. The pergola niftily led to the water feature and downwards to the lower, central garden area. The lovely planting was a mix of specimen trees, evergreen shrubs and hardy perennials, with clipped box hedging, complementing the garden's urban feel with texture and colour. Coloured, energy-efficient LED lighting gave the garden a city wonderland character at night.
