Designed for the 2011 RHS Chelsea Flower Show by Kate Gould Gardens and constructed by the Garden Builders. This stunning show garden celebrates the 650th Anniversary of the Magistracy.

The underlying concept was to create an elegant and symmetrical garden within which every element refers either subtly or obviously to the story of pageantry and the values of the magistracy. The 7m x 5m garden was within the Urban Gardens category. The garden celebrated the magistracy's longevity and also aimed to show that it was very much active in the here and now – as well as dedicated to the future. The garden is therefore imagined, as a courthouse would be, in a central and modern town location, backing onto the courtrooms themselves and set above an urban car-park. This means that all plants are either in containers or else have shallow root balls to fit this parameter. The garden has been designed for use by the magistrates themselves, to work, reflect or relax in during the working day. A beautiful mixed species living wall along with stone clad piers and bespoke etched glass panels represented the rear wall of the courthouse. One of the main features was a lead clad trough with bespoke spouts cascading into a lower lead clad rill. The floor covering was a combination of reclaimed york stone and local gravels, providing a permeable surface. The feature trees 'flat pleached plane trees' were underplanted with cubes of box hedging with a mix of seasonal herbacious planting. Rosa 'Justice of the peace' was beautifully incorporated within the planting scheme where many plants appeared in threes as magistrates sit in threes. The two beautiful carved oak benches were commissioned by the garden designer as well as the lead, glass works and wooden panelling. Six bespoke surface-embroidered cushions were commissioned on behalf of The Magistrates’ Association by FCW, a social enterprise programme that teaches needlework to prison inmates.
