The British Heart Foundation's 'Mending Broken Hearts Appeal Garden' was sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, designed by Ann-Marie Powell and constructed by the Garden Builders. The garden celebrates the British Heart Foundation's (BHF) Mending Broken Hearts Appeal - to raise £50m for ground-breaking research into regenerative science. The initial concept for the show garden design was inspired by the vibrant artwork of Sir Peter Blake, for the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal artwork and also from an MRI scan image taken by Dr Patrick Hales, showing the curving network of muscles surrounding the human heart.
The design that emerged incorporated lots of hard landscaping - transclucent red resin stepping stones - inspired by blood platelets - that take you through lush planting and across a pool. Vibrant red steel arches evoke veins and arteries. The structures of the show garden serve to reflect the structures both inside and outside the body, within the garden and within the journey that is life. There are lots of healthy edible plants within the garden including willow - the source of asprin. An amazing lighting scheme incorporating red LED lighting illuminates the show garden after nightfall magically transforming the whole scheme!
