Project 41 - RHS Gold Medal 09: Kate Gould - The Garden Builders
Send To A Friend Eco Chic - Gold Medal Winning Garden & Winner of Best Urban Garden in Show - at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, London, 2009.
Kate Gould of Kate Gould Designs chose the Garden Builders to construct the Eco Chic garden within the Urban Garden category at the 2009 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The team worked extremely hard to complete the build for this exacting design within the very short build up period allotted.
The main theme behind the garden was 're-cycling & inner city urban re-generation'. The clever design incorporated the use of builders' materials which are often left on a building site after building works have taken place there, such as, scaffold poles, scaffold boards, sections of stone and sheet metal mesh. The notion of a 'shady, left-over space squashed between two high office buildings' was the garden designers inspiration for the show garden.
A lush green wall and a neat stone water feature were included to increase the feeling of restfulness and tranquillity within a limited and 'harsh' urban space. A clever walkway pergola, formed from scaffold poles with glass roof, glass walling and mesh walkway with neat under-planting including shade-loving ferns, formed the dramatic entrance to the show garden and led neatly onwards the water feature and then downwards towards the lower, central garden area. Specimen trees, evergreen shrubs & hardy perennials, along with a neatly clipped box hedge, fill the garden with texture and colour.
At night the space is transformed into a city wonderland, with coloured energy efficient LED lighting.
The Eco Chic garden was not only awarded a coveted RHS Gold Medal but also awarded Winner of Best Urban Garden in Show!
