Project 39 - Bali Awards 09: Kate Gould - Maida Vale
Send To A Friend Garden designed by Kate Gould of Kate Gould Gardens and built by the Garden Builders.
The designers brief from the client was to create a contemporary outdoor space suitable for family entertaining and summer living. The garden would mostly be used in the evenings, as is the case with many city gardens. The clever use of lighting within this garden reflects this major requirement. The materials used within the garden scheme were to be sympathetic to the materials within the interior of the property and certainly equal in their high quality.
The side walls were raised by 500mm in height and rendered to a smooth finish and painted to achieve a bright and light reflective surface and the tops of the walls were fitted with smart horizontal cedar slatted panels to achieve additional height and a feeling of security and privacy. The stone cladding of the water feature area and the base of an unusual floating bench, built into the wall, with clever concealed strip lighting underneath, were formed from beautiful Dura limestone to match the floor areas. The stone on the floor was sandblasted in order to create a finish matching the interior stone floor and the stone used for the cladding was honed and polished to create an alternative look and texture. A deck area was formed from Ipe hardwood decking, again the materials matching those used in the interior of the property. A main focal point was the horizontal bespoke water feature pool, providing a gently refreshing feel and relaxing sound. Comfortable, smart furniture was positioned in front of a built in 'fire place' complete with gel burners, offering the client a chic and exciting entertainment area. The stone detail is a clever reflection of the pyramids in Egypt - where the clients used to live. A free-standing mirror polished stainless steel water feature offered the gentle sounds of running water and creates clever light reflection, whilst the use of stainless steel was duplicated within the funky cladding of the built in utility cupboards placed alongside a side wall. Feature specimen plants, pleached trees and chic planters combine to create a truly exotic paradise. The lighting used within the scheme was paramount to the clients' brief of being able to use the garden well into the evening. A combination of spike mounted lights and recessed fittings creates a chic party zone in the evening and colour change LED lighting alongside the gorgeous palms adds a final excitement factor.
We achieved a garden that illustrates the highest level of finish and integration of materials possible within the budget set.
