For reference take a look at the cross section drawing on how to finish a large pond with various different edges. This diagram shows the construction method for a large informal shaped pond which you can see in the photos below. The area is initially marked out and the levels checked and a mini excavator used to excavate out the area of the pond. This area is always initially bigger than the final pond shape in order to allow for the pond shelf to be accommodated.

Once the initial shape has been outlined the pond can be shaped manually in order to remove any large stones or sharp objects and materials which may puncture the liner. One very important factor is to introduce a 75mm or 100mm perforated pipe into the middle of the pond to expel any gases that may build up under the liner. This factor stops the liner bulging out at a later date. The pipe should be wrapped in terran and pea shingle to keep it clear of any debris or soil possibly clogging up the pipe.

The base area of the pond is lined with a layer of soft sand and then an under lay is fitted. The butyl liner can be cut to size and welded on site. The liner and underlay are secured on the ledge by sandwiching them between concrete blocks – as indicated on our drawing. This method allows for soil to be naturally graded into the pool and for aquatic planting to be planted whilst giving a secure edge to the outer section of the pond.

Our diagram shows the position of a submersible pump and UV filter system to keep the pond clean. Other systems can be achieved using dry pumps located outside the pond itself.
